Equipped with a boarding pass, visitors embark on an unforgettable journey through time and experience the stories of the emigrants first hand. At the quay they first meet emigrants from various European countries. How did they experience this emotional moment of farewell and departure to an unknown country? Audio stations give visitors more information. Togetherthey board the ship, where visitors meet snoring passengers in their cabins and passengers in a dining room on board an Ocean Liner in 1923. Having arrived at the immigration station Ellis Island, they now have to undergo an immigration test at the legal desk, like some 12 million immigrants to the United States, hoping to enter the country. With the entry permit in hand, a loud buzz of voices in Grand Central Terminal in New York await them. Here, visitors will learn more about the life of the emigrants in the New World -from fulfilled and shattered dreams, departure and homesickness.

In addition, in the second part of the exhibition, visitors encounter a reconstruction of a 1970ties shopping mall, where they can follow the paths of the immigrants living in Germany today and find out more about their moving life stories. There is also the possibility to embark on a personal search for emigrated ancestors in our Family Research room. Our museum cinema showcases exclusive movies about the lives of the emigrants and immigrants.

From far away it could be a ship or a cloud. Klimahaus Bremerhaven, future core attraction of the old/new port is something special.

What does Bremerhaven have in common with the deserts of Niger, the South Pacific state of Samoa and St. Lawrence Island in Alaska? They are all located on the same line of longitude: 8 degrees east. Yet the living conditions experienced by the people in these climate zones vary wildly, with aridity and heat in Niger, tropical cyclones on Samoa and melting glaciers on St. Lawrence Island. The history of the climate from the Earth's formation 3.9 billion years ago up to the year 2050 is shown in the Perspectives area. On a total of around 11,500 m2 of exhibition space, Kilmahaus® offers unique experiences and well-founded information.
