Are you interested in the art and science of beer brewing? If so, this self-driving tour is right up your street! Explore three cities devoted to the wonderful world of beer, from Freiburg in Germany's Black Forest to Heidelberg, on the Neckar River, and Wurzburg in the Bavaria region. The tour includes hotel stopovers, complimentary breakfast, and a 3-course dinner for two in each city.

Your self-drive journey begins in Freiburg, a vibrant university town where brewing beer has been a traditional craft for many years. Enjoy a guided city tour and visit one of the Freiburg’s largest breweries, where you will learn all you need to know about the 1516 German Beer Purity Law. Afterwards, spend the evening in one of Freiburg’s many beer gardens and enjoy an overnight stay in a 4-star hotel, including a buffet breakfast and 3-course dinner for two at the hotel restaurant (excluding drinks).

The next day you will continue to Heidelberg, situated on the River Neckar in south-west Germany. As early as the 18th century, the town was home to a number of small breweries. Of these, the last surviving brewery is Heidelberger Schlossquell, which was first mentioned in 1753. Your overnight stay in a 3-star hotel includes a glass of sparkling or mulled wine upon arrival (depending on the season), and a buffet breakfast in the morning, as well as a 3-course dinner for two at a partner restaurant in Heidelberg (excluding drinks).

Your last stop on the tour is Würzburg, in the Bavarian region of Lower Franconia. Bavaria is known far and wide as the home of beer, but less well known is that it was once famous for wine-growing. Beer brewing was only introduced to the area after the Thirty Years’ War – before this, it was restricted to the north of Germany. Visit the traditional Würzburger Hofbräu brewery pub, which produces a locally well-known pilsner beer, and perhaps combine your visit with a brewery tour. Later, enjoy an overnight stay in a 3-star hotel in Würzburg, including a buffet breakfast and a 3-course dinner for two in the hotel restaurant (excluding drinks) before your journey ends the next day.

Visit the charming red-roofed city of Heidelberg on an overnight city break, and enjoy 4-star accommodation, a privately guided tour and use of a HeidelbergCard. Combining a city tour with plenty of free time, the package is a great way to get acquainted with the picturesque and historic riverside town. Learn about the history of landmarks like the Old Bridge, and use the HeidelbergCard to visit Heidelberg Castle — the ruined Renaissance fortress that dominates views around town. Dinner at an Old Town restaurant is included, as is a buffet breakfast at the hotel.

Your private city tour, as described below, can be enjoyed on Day 1 or Day 2. If you would prefer it to take place on the second day, please make a note in the 'Special Requirements' field when you book.

Day 1: (D)
Check in to your Heidelberg hotel in the afternoon, and then head out on a 1.5-hour private walking tour to get acquainted with the history-laden sights of the city. The oldest university town in Germany, Heidelberg has a bounty of landmarks both in and around its baroque Old Town. See the Old Bridge, Heidelberg Town Hall and the Church of the Holy Ghost. Learn little-known facts about plazas like University Square and Market Square, and have your camera ready for a wander along Hauptstrasse, Germany’s longest pedestrianized street.

After your tour, make use of some free time to enjoy the city at your own pace. Why not use your HeidelbergCard to take the funicular to Heidelberg Castle? The half-ruined hilltop fortress towers down over the city, and its views make the steep trip to the top oh-so worthwhile. Back down in the town, shop for souvenirs or use your time to explore. In the evening, enjoy a 3-course dinner in an Old Town restaurant, and then return to your hotel for your overnight stay.

Overnight: 4-star hotel in Heidelberg

Day 2: (B)
Check out of your hotel after your continental buffet breakfast, and spend the day sightseeing as you wish. Your HeidelbergCard is valid for 48 hours, so make the most of it and visit more of Heidelberg's attractions on your own.

Welcome to Breisach upon Rhine, a town with a long-standing history is situated halfway between Freiburg (Black Forest) and Colmar (Alsace). From both cities you can get to Breisach by public transport easily in less than 1-hour. The tour includes a local wine drink welcome at the tourist information center, a guided sightseeing tour of the historical town center which is situated around the cathedral St. Stephan and finally, a visit to the famous Geldermann sparkling wine cellar.

The guided tour starts in the Breisach tourist information center with a glass of local wine. Afterwards the guide will take you to Breisach’s historical town center situated around the cathedral St. Stephan. The church is the town's main historical landmark with elements from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. After a short tour inside the cathedral, you will enjoy the marvelous view from the terrace outside, reaching from the Black Forest over the Rhine valley to the Vosges mountains. Among the testimonials of nearly 4,000 years of history, which are part of your visit is the “Radbrunnen” tower, bearing a water well which reaches down to the Rhine river.

The first part of the tour will finish on the cathedral hill. There are some restaurants for lunch in the upper town, more are situated around the market square in the lower town.

At 2:00pm you will start the second part of your Breisach tour with a visit to the famous Geldermann winery which specializes in producing sparkling wine in the same style as Champagne is made.
